A word of advice; It is a good idea to engage the person or
company that is experienced in audio visual installation first,
before you purchase any new equipment.
Often you will get a much better outcome economically and in
terms of integration and installation to have your equipment
supplied and installed by the same company.

I know that not all of you will be convinced that this is the
way to go, so for those of you who would prefer to do it yourself,
here are a few tips to help you in getting the best possible
outcome for your money.
(1)
Consider the size and location of the room that you wish to
make your Theatre room. If the room is quite small a Projector
may not be the best option, a large windscreen TV, Plasma
or LCD Screen may be better option.
Also if you live near to a busy road, be aware of outside noise
entering the room. On a similar note think of your neighbours
next door or above or below, if you live in an apartment, because
the sound from the Sub Woofer
especially, can travel quite a distance, walls and fences offer
little resistance to a powerful Sub Woofer,
even at low volume.
(2)
Will you be watching Movies, sport, etc during the day or mainly
at night.
If you like watching movies or sport through the day. Use a
room in the house that has the least amount of light penetration
for your Theatre room. i.e., a room that has full sunlight throughout
the day may not be suitable to use, unless you are prepared
to block-out the light with heavy curtains or shutters.
(3) For
ease of operation and superior sound and picture quality, purchase
a surround sound amplifier with
multiple inputs and outputs, the more the better in my opinion.
An amplifier with at least two component inputs and a component
output, three S-Video inputs and outputs, three digital audio
inputs and digital out, etc would be the absolute minimum, an
amplifier with this capacity would
start at around the $1200 mark.
Some package style sound systems
on the market are extremely difficult to configure easily with
other equipment in a home Theatre situation, my advice is to
stay away from these type of systems, that is, if you don't
want to do a whole set of complicated AV switching and use an
array of remote controls.

PLASMA INSTALLATION WITH IN-WALL SPEAKERS
This system is suitable
for a small room or apartment where you would like to
preserve floor space.

Bose Lifestyle 35 with speakers mounted on ceiling and
Acoustimas Bass Speaker hidden under bench seating.

The customer wanted a minimalist look, which I think we
achieved here.
